ADULT HEALTH SCREENING TEST
Screening tests are an important part of health care and disease prevention.
Some of the most important screening tests are designed to look for early signs
of common diseases:
Procedure: Pap Test and Pelvic Exam (women)
Recommendation: Annually, unless your doctor recommends otherwise if
you've had 3 consecutive negative tests, you may need the test only every 3
years or so). Note: Generally, women who have had hysterectomies no longer need
pap tests, but should still have a pelvic exam.
Procedure: Breast Cancer Screening (women)
Recommendation: Monthly self-exam; doctor exam every 3 years up to age
40, and annually starting at age 40. A mammogram every one or two years starting
at age 40; starting at age 50, a mammogram every year.
Procedure: Prostate Screening (men)
Recommendation: Annual digital rectal exam for all men starting at age
40. Annual prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test starting at age 50
(starting at age 40 for African Americans and men with a family history of
prostate cancer). Note: Some medical experts feel the PSA test should not be
routinely recommended for all men over 50 because it can sometimes result in
unnecessary (i.e., non-lifesaving) treatment.
Procedure: Colon Cancer Screening: Fecal Occult Blood Test
Recommendation:
Annually
starting at age 50.
Procedure: Sigmoidoscopy (exam of portion of the large intestine) or...
Colonoscopy (exam of entire large intestine)
Recommendation:
Sigmoidoscopy every 5 years age 50 and over. Colonoscopy every 10 years age 50
and over.
Procedure: Cholesterol and Triglyceride Screening
Recommendation: Every 5 or so years for men over 35 and for women over
45.
Procedure: High Blood Pressure Screening
Recommendation: Every one or two years if your blood pressure is normal.
Can be done in conjunction with any doctor visit. Also can be done free of
charge in most pharmacies.
Procedure: Diabetes Screening
Recommendation: Every 3 years for adults age 45 and older.
These screening recommendations are for healthy people. If you fall into a
high-risk category for a particular disease (or have had the disease), ask your
doctor about the best screening schedule for you.
